What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The distribution of a magazine is key to the success of the product. A distributor is a company or organisation which manages the export of the product and pumps it into the necessary shops and stores, in order for maximum sales. They asses what shops would be ideal for the product and make sure they get it in the quantity they need in order to make maximum profit, this idea links in with ‘supply and demand’, this is the process of supplementing a shop with an amount of product that is ideal for the size of the target audience. An example of a magazine distributor or publisher of which distributes would be:

This is a national distributor who deal with a variety of magazines. In relation to my product, I felt the ideal places to distribute my magazine too would be: Popular supermarkets, smaller individual shops, petrol station etc. The reason being this is the most common place to pick up a magazine, this therefore means that it should be more open to the public. Both companies are owned by Time Warner meaning they have the pottential power to expand to an internationa market.

I think that big distributors such as: IPC MEDIA - MARKETFORCE could distribute my magazine due to its popularity potential and the sheer size of my target audience, my target audience are a national phenomenon that reach to every corner of the nation, this therefore means that if I make my magazine available in open public places it should make large sales. As my magazine is similar to other magazines in the market I need to make the magazine accessible in a different way, I decided another good place to distribute would be over the internet, as it is a popular and increasingly common thing, of which my target audience have much access to and use frequently. My intentions would be to sell it on the internet, so they get it through either the post as a subscription or perhaps a virtual package that can be viewed on their computer.

  1. IPC's distribution company is called Marketforce, so whilst your mag could be prubished by IPC it would technically be a different distributor, although both companies are owned by Time Warner. Google them.
