To relate to my audience it was key to have someone who looks like the target group I’m aiming at. I had my model wear casual clothes and have his general over all appearance quite messy and relaxed. The reason I did this is because I wanted the values of my magazine to be reflected in the models appearance, so therefore I wanted the magazine and model to come across as casual and doesn’t really care what other people think, but yet still some what trendy. This I hoped would represent my audience.
Looking at the two photographs, mine being on the left, we see two very relaxed poses. I had intended for my model to slouch and look, un-bothered by the camera. This is similar to the real magazines model as we is looking relaxed with his hands in his pockets similar to how mine has his behind his back.
Continuing on looks we can see that both our wearing relaxed clothes that aren’t to much over the top. Although there is a bit more colour in mine I do think this applies to both. The shirt, which my model is wearing is symbolic of my target audience and is an expected outfit for anyone within this group, this therefore reinforces the streyotypes that come with my target audience. This all in turn allows them to relate to the model. When we consider the angle of the shot, I made sure to have a low-ish angle so the person looks like they are powerful and on their game.
Also I had it so my model would look at the camera, therefore addressing the audience, this is similar to the real magazine picture. The expression on my model was relaxed and quite blank, as I didn’t really want him to portray to much emotion as there was no need. This is also similar to the magazines image. The reason I didn't want him to have to much of an expression is because if he was smiling and being over the top, this would put off my audience and this isn't considered 'cool'. Because I have him blank faced, it means that my audience don't think he is trying to hard or trying to be 'cool'.
Both the images have medium close ups as this allows the audience to see enough of the model and then can therefore relate and identify them. The lighting on my image however, is very different to the real magazines. Theirs is positioned outside and therefore has 360 degree lighting, with maybe some additional 3 point lighting. Mine was inside so the lighting isn’t as natural, this was also caused by only using two lights not giving a full coverage and causing some shadowing. I did however manage to light up the face, so the audience could identify and address them.
My overall aim was to get the audience to see my model, as ‘one of their own’, this would therefore draw them into the magazine and allow them to relate to it. It also presents my target audience as they dress similar and also gesture and act similar too.

A good start but a bit more on connotations. For example, the blank, unsmiling expression (representing the "cool" of your youth, where a smile might be seen as too eager?) or the shirt...
